Mushroom Masala – Easy Indian Recipe

Mushrooms stir-fried with Indian spices, perfect side dish…

This has turned into one of my favorite dishes with mushrooms. Earthy mushrooms along with the spices, it’s an absolute delight. A perfect vegetarian side dish to enjoy with rice or chapati.

  • Oil- 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds- 1 tsp
  • Dried red chilies, halved- 2
  • Curry leaves- 10 leaves
  • Onion, chopped- 1
  • Salt- 1 tsp
  • Mushrooms, brown cremini or white button, sliced- 2 cups
  • Kashmiri chili powder- 1 tsp (for more spice add hot chili powder)
  • Turmeric powder- ⅛ tsp
  • Coriander powder- 2 tsp
  • Cumin powder- ½ tsp
  • Garam masala- ½ tsp
  • Lemon or lime juice- 1 tsp
  • Sesame seeds- 1 tbsp
  • Cilantro, chopped- 2 tbsp
  1. Place a saucepan over medium heat, add oil & let turn hot.
  2. Add mustard seeds, let splutter.
  3. Add cumin seeds, let turn light brown in color.
  4. Add dried red chilies & curry leaves, saute for a few seconds.
  5. Add onions, season with ½ tsp salt, let onions turn golden in color.
  6. Add mushrooms, combine well.
  7. Add ¼ cup water & cook covered for a few minutes till mushrooms turn soft.
  8. Do not overcook the mushrooms.
  9. Add all the spices: Kashmiri chili, turmeric, coriander, cumin, garam masala & ½ tsp salt. Combine well.
  10. If you prefer this dish to be spicy, add regular hot chili powder instead of Kashmiri chili powder.
  11. Add 2 tbsp water & stir fry over high heat for 2 minutes.
  12. Add freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice, combine well.
  13. Add sesame seeds & chopped cilantro, combine well.
  14. Serve in a bowl & enjoy with rice or chapati.
