Crispy Thread Chicken- Trending Kerala Snack

Your tastebuds will go crunchy, crunchy…

Thread chicken is a trending snack in Calicut, a district in Kerala. I’ve watched many tempting videos making this particular snack & I couldn’t resist making it in my kitchen. Chicken strips coated with samosa or spring roll pastry sheets cut into threads & fried. It will appear as if chicken is wrapped in threads, hence the name.

The threads will get super crispy when fried along with the chicken, tasted absolutely delicious & I was seen enjoying a few thread chicken in just one sitting. It’s irresistible so make sure to make a large batch 🙂

Ingredients
For chicken marination
  • Boneless chicken breast- 2 breasts, cut into thin strips
  • Soy sauce, low-sodium- 3 tbsp
  • Chili paste or sauce- 1 tbsp
  • All purpose flour- 2 tbsp
Other ingredients
  • Samosa pastry sheets or spring roll sheets
Making dipping sauce
  • Mayonnaise- 4 tbsp
  • Chili sauce- ½ tbsp
Instructions
  1. Use boneless chicken, I've taken 2 chicken breasts.
  2. Half the chicken breast vertically & cut into thin strips. Make sure the strips are thin.
  3. Add the chicken strips to a bowl, add soy sauce, chili paste & all purpose flour.
  4. Combine well, let marinate for 15 minutes.
  5. For making the threads, use store bought samosa pastry sheets or spring roll sheets.
  6. Stack up the sheets & using a knife cut into thin strips.
  7. Don't cut into too thick strips.
  8. If the strips are stuck to each other, separate them.
  9. Coat each chicken strip in the threads & completely wrap it in the threads.
  10. Keep it aside.
  11. Keep a frying pan over medium heat, add oil for deep frying.
  12. Place the chicken strips in the oil & fry over medium low heat.
  13. Flip it over & fry till both sides have turned golden brown in color.
  14. Don't fry over high heat, the threads will turn brown very fast & the chicken will be under cooked.
  15. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towel.
  16. For making the dipping sauce, I've combined garlic mayonnaise & chili sauce. I love this combination, you'll get the heat from the chili sauce & the creaminess from the mayonnaise.
  17. Dip the thread chicken in the dipping sauce & enjoy while its warm.
  18. The threads will be super crispy, along with the fried chicken tastes amazing.
