Succulent, rich, creamy & super delicious Afghani chicken cooked in the Instant Pot…
This is a popular chicken dish & I cooked this in the Instant Pot. Chicken is marinated in an aromatic & creamy white sauce, air fried till golden brown & then cooked along with the sauce. Absolutely delicious chicken that goes well with naan, chapati, or rice.

Ingredients
For Grinding
- Onion, diced- 1
- Ginger- 2-inch slice
- Garlic- 4 cloves
- Green chilies- 3 to 4
- Cilantro- ½ cup
- Water- ¼ cup
For Making Marinade
- Yogurt- ½ cup
- Cream- ¼ cup
- Ground cashew or almond paste- ¼ cup
- White pepper powder- ½ to 1 tsp
- Cumin powder- 1 tsp
- Garam masala- 1 tsp
- Lemon juice- 2 tbsp
- Salt- 1½ tsp
For Cooking
- Chicken legs or bone-in pieces- 8
- Oil- 2 tbsp
- Whole cardamom- 3
- Dried bay leaves- 2
- Whole peppercorns- 1 tsp
- Cilantro, chopped- ¼ cup
Instructions
- To a blender jar, add all the ingredients mentioned for grinding, grind to a smooth paste.
- In a large bowl, add all the ingredients for making the marinade, combine well.
- Add the ground green paste to the yogurt marinade, combine well.
- I've taken 8 chicken legs, any bone-in chicken pieces can be used.
- Using a sharp knife, add lines on the chicken flesh.
- Add the chicken to the marinade, combine well.
- Cover the bowl, let marinate for 2 hours or overnight the better.
- After 2 hours of marination, I've air-fried the chicken in the Instant Pot air fryer.
- If you don't have an air fryer, bake in the oven at 400 F for 20 minutes or grill on a pan over the stovetop till the chicken turns golden brown.
- Place the stainless steel pot into the main pot, place the air fryer basket in the pot & the broil tray in the air fryer basket.
- Grease the broil tray with oil.
- Place the marinated chicken on the broil tray.
- Keep aside the marinade left in the bowl.
- Close the Instant Pot with the Air Fryer lid.
- Select Air Fry, temperature 400 F, time 20 minutes.
- After 20 minutes, take the chicken out of the air fryer. Transfer to a plate.
- For cooking the gravy, I’ve used Instant Pot.
- Can be also cooked in a non-stick saucepan over medium heat.
- Select saute setting on the Instant Pot, medium temperature. Let the stainless steel pot turn hot.
- Add oil, whole cardamom, dried bay leaves & peppercorns, saute for a minute.
- Add the marinade or the white sauce, cook for a few minutes till it’s reduced to half.
- Add the air-fried chicken to the gravy, combine well & cook till the gravy thickens & is coated on the chicken.
- Garnish with cilantro, combine well.
- Remove the pot from the main pot.
- Serve in a bowl.
