Literally, any kind of veggies can be used for making thoran. It is served as a side dish along with rice for lunch.

In my parents house, thorans are served almost everyday for lunch along with veg and non-veg dishes. Last weekend, I made a typical Kerala style lunch, served shrimp curry and broccoli thoran or stir fry along with rosematta or palakad matta rice. This was the first time I’d tried making thoran with broccoli, and guess what? I loved it. Usually, grated coconut combined with some spices are added to thoran. However, I made broccoli thoran without the addition of coconut.

Broccoli Stir fry- Broccoli Thoran Recipe

Recipe Type: Side dish

Cuisine: Indian

Author: Thasneen

Prep time: 5 mins

Cook time: 15 mins

Total time: 20 mins

Serves: 4 People

Ingredients

Oil- 1 tbsp

Mustard seeds- 1 tsp

Chana dal- 1/2 tbsp

Urad dal- 1/2 tbsp

Whole dry red chilies- 2

Curry leaves- 1 sprig

Onion, chopped- 1

Broccoli, chopped very small- 1 head

Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp

Chili powder- 1 tsp

Coriander powder- 1 1/2 tsp

Salt- to taste

Water- 1/4 cup

Instructions

Finely chop the broccoli in a food processor or chop very small using a knife.

Place a non-stick pan over medium heat, add oil.

When the oil turns hot, add mustard seeds, let it splutter.

First add chana dal, saute till it starts to turn light golden.
