Ingredients
Moong dal- 1 cup, rinsed
Water- 2 cups
Salt- 1 tsp
For grinding
Coconut grated- 1 cup
Green chilies- 2 (or depending on your spice level)
Garlic, chopped- 2 cloves
Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
Curry leaves- 1 sprig
Cumin seeds- ½ tsp
Water- ½ cup
For Seasoning
Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
Whole red dried chilies- 2, halved
Small pearl onions, chopped- 4, or 1 shallot
Curry leaves- 1 sprig
Ghee- 2 tbsp
Instructions
To the stainless steel pot, add moong dal with water and salt.
No need to soak the moong dal in water, just rinse it under running water taken in a strainer.
Close the pot with the lid.
Select pressure cook setting, Set time to 10 minutes at high pressure.
After 10 minutes of cooking, do a quick pressure release.
Open the lid, combine the cooked mung dal well.
Grind the above-mentioned ingredients 'for grinding' in a blender to a smooth paste and keep aside.
Add the ground mixture to the cooked moong dal and combine everything well.
Add 1 cup water, combine well.
Add ½ to 1 tsp salt based on your needs.
Turn on Saute setting at medium temperature.
Cook in saute setting for 5 minutes until the raw smell of the coconut goes away.
Remove the pot from the main pot and keep it covered.
Cooking the Seasoning
In a frying pan, heat ghee. As soon as the ghee turns hot, add mustard seeds. Let splutter.
Add chopped small onion, fry till they turn golden in color.
Add whole dried red chilies halved and curry leaves, saute for a few seconds.
Pour this seasoning over the Parippu/lentil curry and close with the lid so that the aroma will infuse into the curry.
Serve along with rice.
First course in Sadya is rice, parippu and drizzle some ghee over it and enjoy.
